Founded in 1898, it sits on one of the world's great ore bodies of lead, silver and zinc. The minerals were mined by BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary), which for a long time was Australia's largest company. The city is known as the "Silver City" because of its mineral wealth. There are still two working mines in the city.
